Academy of Our Lady students in Sr. Janna San Juan’s Environmental Science class are participating in Jefferson Parish’s 4-H Coastal Studies of Southeast Louisiana program with the help of Ms. Heather Egger, a Jefferson Parish 4-H Agent. This is an educational program from the Jefferson Parish 4-H Program for youth in 7th to 12th grade.
The program included six hands-on lessons that focus on the geologic history, ecology, and restoration of the coast of southeast Louisiana. This curriculum is being evaluated for the second year by the Jefferson Parish 4-H program. Lessons include the Geology of Southeast Louisiana, Using Remote Sensing to Assess Coastal Land Loss, Water Quality, and Current Issues.
Students in the class are currently learning about Louisiana’s Pontchartrain Basin and its salinity levels. Students are also learning about the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico and its oxygen and salinity levels. - Seniors PJ Lubag and Britney Bui
