Members of the Speech and Debate Club senior Jenna Hymel and freshman Ashlyn Gisclair competed in the virtual Springboard Series sponsored by the Julia Burke Foundation hosted by the National Speech and Debate Association. Academy of Our Lady students debated against other students throughout the United States in the Lincoln Douglas category on December 5.

Academy of Our Lady welcomed more than 100 future penguins to campus on December 3 for Open House. Guests met with Principal Sr. Michelle Geiger, toured campus with a faculty and student guide, viewed academic offerings and ended the evening in the gym with club and athletic displays. Pre-freshman Ella Denny and senior Olivia Marque have been named Academy of Our Lady’s 2020 Students of the Year. Students of the year selection is based on academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. Each year Academy of Our Lady selects a pre-freshman and senior as students of the year to represent the school in the New Orleans Archdiocesan Student of the Year competition. Due to the shortened school year last year, the annual Honor Society Induction was not able to be held. Over the past few weeks Academy of Our Lady’s administration held small ceremonies to honor the new 19-20 school year members of the following honor societies Rho Kappa, National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and National French Honor Society. Academy of Our Lady's Theatre II class is proud to present Breaking Barriers: A One Act Play that is a powerful and well-researched depiction of the lives of Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Annie Oakley, Clara Barton and Jane Austen on November 6 at 7:00 pm. Senior Abigail Melling has been named to 20-21 LHSAA All-Academic Girls Volleyball Team. Melling has been a student at Academy of Our Lady for the past five years as well as a member of the volleyball team for five years. She currently holds a 4.38 GPA. Melling is a member of National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Rho Kappa, Ambassadors, Book Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Robotics and Salesians for Life. Temperature checks, masks and social distancing were new elements students experienced while attending Book Day on Wednesday kicking off the 2020-21 school year. Though Book Day looked a little different this year, the Salesian family spirit remains the same! Students, faculty and staff were excited to be back on campus. Tuesday, May 12 marked what should have been graduation day for Academy of Our Lady’s thirteenth graduating class. Due to the global pandemic, a ceremony was not able to be held. Rather, a private ceremony was held over the course of May 28, 29, and 30 for each graduate and her family. Though their senior year has not gone as planned the faculty and staff are incredibly proud of Academy of Our Lady’s class of 2020. The Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team, the Power Struck Girls, traveled to Arkansas March 5-7 to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition Arkansas Regional Qualifier. The Power Struck Girls ranked 20th of 58 teams from across the country and Mexico, winning 6 of their 9 matches. The team had eight weeks to design, build and code their robot, Kanata, to complete a number of tasks for this year's game: Infinite Recharge. To view photos click on the title of this post.
