Prior to the end of the year, underclassman awards were distributed to students during homeroom. This school year was a year of new experiences from safety guidelines to online class days due to Covid-19. Students were required and asked to make new adjustments like never before. Each student was a true example of resilience and poise as patience was exhibited daily. Coursework and academics were a priority evening during such trying times. Though a proper awards ceremony could not be held, students were honored for their achievement by receiving certificates of recognition. Sr. Jana San Juan’s Environmental Science class participated in the Sewer Science Program which is designed to encourage students to explore wastewater treatment and water quality. Students learn the significance of water, treatment processes and their impact on the environment. Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng presented Sr. Jana with a Certificate of Merit for participation in the Sewer Science Program in service to the community. Junior Olivia St. Germain is the recipient of the Jaqueline Cambre Scholarship given by the St. Joseph Women’s Club in Gretna. Recipients of this award have exemplary grades, project good character and are active in the school and community activities. The monetary value of the award is a $1,000 scholarship. The award was presented to Olivia by Father Gary Copping. According to NOLA.com, Jackie Cambre founded two ongoing traditions at St. Joseph’s, the annual living rosary in the garden held each October and Group #135 of the Schoenstatt Rosary Family of Louisiana which is continued by members of the women’s club. Both of Jacqueline Cambre’s daughters, Gretna Mayor Belinda C. Constant and Wendy C. Bush, are Archbishop Blenk High Schools Alumnae.
Academy of Our Lady's Thalian Society is hosting another Bits of Broadway fundraiser benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. Private ceremonies were held for each graduate of the class of 2021 and her family over the course of May 17, 18 and 19. Diplomas were awarded to 109 graduates. The Class of 2021 earned a total of $7,949,556 in scholarships. In addition, Academy of Our Lady’s Class of 2021 is leaving campus with a total 468 college credit hours. The newest members of the Academy of Our Lady family gathered on campus April 28 for Welcome Night. Incoming pre-freshmen, freshmen and transfer students received important information for the upcoming school year and viewed presentations from members of the administration. Students were recently asked to vote for a teacher they felt should be awarded Academy of Our Lady’s Teacher of the Year. When asked to describe their teachers the words patient, kind, caring, dedicated, organized, energetic, passionate, confident, poised, inspiring, encouraging, understanding, reasonable, helpful, engaging, interactive, welcoming and genuine are just a few adjectives that were used. Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team member sophomore Kyra Poree’ has been named a Dean’s List Finalist by the FIRST Tech Challenge. Kyra is just one of four students in the four-state region of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi to be selected. Students currently enrolled in physics ventured to Archbishop Shaw’s pool on Monday, April 19 to test their cardboard boats as part of the annual physics boat project. Putting their understanding of buoyancy, fluid dynamics and engineering practices to the test, students constructed boats out of cardboard to race against their classmates with the challenge of making sure the boat can sustain weight without sinking. The Louisiana sector of Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society hosted its annual State Convention on March 27. This year’s convention was held virtually due to Covid-19. Academy of Our Lady students in Sr. Janna San Juan’s Environmental Science class are participating in Jefferson Parish’s 4-H Coastal Studies of Southeast Louisiana program with the help of Ms. Heather Egger, a Jefferson Parish 4-H Agent. This is an educational program from the Jefferson Parish 4-H Program for youth in 7th to 12th grade. For more click on the title of this post.
The Law Intern class ventured off campus to visit the Jefferson Parish 24th Judicial District Court. Students observed a motion and saw first-hand what takes place when someone takes a plea. Judge Grefer, assistant district attorneys and Chief Judicial Administrator Renee Aguilar, who is an alumna and current AOL parent, took time to visit with the students, answer questions and explain the innerworkings of the court. Students currently enrolled in Computer Programming with Sr. Michelle have learned Swift which is a language of programming. They are now currently constructing robots that they will program using Swift after they are built. For photos click on the title of this post.
Seniors Emily Lubag, Patricia Lubag and Hannah Bassett received a surprise delivery from Nicholls State University. The red box contained a notification that each student received an academic scholarship worth a notable monetary amount. Emily Lubag received $51,600, Hannah Bassett received $45,600 and Patricia Lubag received $26,080 over the span of four years. Congratulations ladies! We are proud of you!
