Members of Key Club visited the new Berean House Community Center for the homeless and city community. Senior members of the Ambassadors were surprised with a gift for their dedication and exemplary service of representing Academy of Our Lady throughout their years of high school. In lieu of an end of the year party, each senior was given a customized gift with a heartfelt sentiment. It’s safe to say the girls were surprised and thrilled! Academy of Our Lady’s Health Care Club hosted the annual Blood Drive on Thursday, April 15. Members of the Academy of Our Lady community were invited to give blood with all donations given in the name of Jake Meerman. Jake is the two-year-old son of Alumna Michelle Labruzza Meerman ’08 who has been diagnosed with B Lymphoblasic Leukemia. Let us continue to keep Jake in our daily prayers. The Louisiana sector of Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society hosted its annual State Convention on March 27. This year’s convention was held virtually due to Covid-19. During the week of February 1-5, Academy of Our Lady’s chapter of the National Honor Society sponsored a school-wide food drive. The Academy of Our Lady Ambassadors are a group of enthusiastic students that love their school and want to share their experiences with others. The girls represent Academy of Our Lady at various school events including Open House, Fantastic Friday Night, Penguin Palooza and Catholic Schools Week Mass to name a few. On February 1, this group of dedicated students were presented with an Ambassador pin. Being an Academy of Our Lady Ambassador is an honor as there is an application process and the students must meet certain academic criteria. The Ambassadors represent the school with grace while maintaining exceptional academic grades as well as being involved in numerous extracurricular activities. We are proud of these young ladies! Right to Life club members, juniors and seniors were encouraged to participate in the Pro-Life video contest sponsored by the Right to Life club. The purpose of the video contest was to bring attention to the fight for the dignity of all life from the moment of conception to natural death. Videos were required to highlight important topics including euthanasia, disability, elderly, immigration, death penalty, stem cell research and adoption. Congratulations to first place winner sophomore Rachel Toups and second place winner freshman Grace Beaman.
Members of the Speech and Debate Club senior Jenna Hymel and freshman Ashlyn Gisclair competed in the virtual Springboard Series sponsored by the Julia Burke Foundation hosted by the National Speech and Debate Association. Academy of Our Lady students debated against other students throughout the United States in the Lincoln Douglas category on December 5.
Photography Club held the first Zoom club meeting of the 20-21 school year on September 9. This year club meetings will be held virtually to limit student exposure until Covid-19 restrictions permit otherwise. Though clubs are unable to meet in person it is exciting for students to begin participating in club activities and socially interacting. The Thalian Society, Academy of Our Lady's drama club, is hosting a second round of auditions for the annual Broadway Benefit show. All high school students, not just AOL students, are invited to audition.
The Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team, the Power Struck Girls, traveled to Arkansas March 5-7 to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition Arkansas Regional Qualifier. The Power Struck Girls ranked 20th of 58 teams from across the country and Mexico, winning 6 of their 9 matches. The team had eight weeks to design, build and code their robot, Kanata, to complete a number of tasks for this year's game: Infinite Recharge. To view photos click on the title of this post.

Mu Alpha Theta observed Pi Day with a weeklong celebration beginning March 9-13. Founded in 1988, Pi Day is an international holiday celebrated around the world. The numbers in the date 3/14 match the first three digits of the mathematical constant pi. Lunchtime activities included pie-a-teacher, relay race pie eating contest and friend vs friend pie eating contests. The math honor society raised more than $300 which will be utilized to purchase pencils, paper and rules for a classroom in need. Click on the title of this post to view photos.
Members of the Right Life Club hosted events during lunch in observance of Right to Life Week January 13-17. The goals of these events were to help students understand that Right to Life is about respect for all life from the moment of conception until natural death. Students focused on various topics including disability, human trafficking, the elderly, abortion and a celebration of all life. Nationally known singer/songwriter, worship/retreat leader Lorraine Hess visited the True Love Waits club on December 16. Hess spoke about how to grow in faith, so that when a time of testing happens, we can get through it with grace. To view pictures and for more click on the title of this post.

Members of Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw High School’s Key Club visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans giving their time to help the residents. The National English Honor Society is hosting their annual Book Drive October 13 - October 17. All students are encouraged to bring in used books to be donated to Friends of the Jefferson Parish Library. NEHS has a goal of collecting 521 books. For more information click on the title of this post.
