Students currently enrolled in physics ventured to Archbishop Shaw’s pool on Monday, April 19 to test their cardboard boats as part of the annual physics boat project. Putting their understanding of buoyancy, fluid dynamics and engineering practices to the test, students constructed boats out of cardboard to race against their classmates with the challenge of making sure the boat can sustain weight without sinking. Academy of Our Lady students in Sr. Janna San Juan’s Environmental Science class are participating in Jefferson Parish’s 4-H Coastal Studies of Southeast Louisiana program with the help of Ms. Heather Egger, a Jefferson Parish 4-H Agent. The Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team, the Power Struck Girls, traveled to Arkansas March 5-7 to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition Arkansas Regional Qualifier. The Power Struck Girls ranked 20th of 58 teams from across the country and Mexico, winning 6 of their 9 matches. The team had eight weeks to design, build and code their robot, Kanata, to complete a number of tasks for this year's game: Infinite Recharge. To view photos click on the title of this post.
Every year students enrolled in Physics are assigned the Egg Drop project. Students are required to design and build a device that will protect an egg from three drops which includes 1 m, 2 m and 5.5 m otherwise known as the roof of the school building. Academy of Our Lady’s Health Care Club hosted a blood drive on March 6 in honor of Health Choices Week. Both students and faculty participated by choosing to give blood potentially saving a life. To view photos click on the title of this post.
Academy of Our Lady’s Science Quiz Bowl Team comprised of four students placed fourth overall in the Louisiana Regional Science Bowl competition receiving $150.00 in prize money. For more click on the title of this post.
Engineering I & III classes were treated to a special presentation from guest speaker Laura Smith, PE. Smith is currently a structural engineer associate at Silman located in New York, Washington DC and Boston. Smith’s portfolio includes various types of projects such as multi-story residential buildings, healthcare facilities and institutional buildings. A few of her notable projects include Paul Milstein Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, the National Museum of African American History of Culture in Washington DC and the New York Botanical Garden in Bronx, New York. Twenty-two Academy of Our Lady students traveled to Thibodaux, Louisiana to compete in the Louisiana Region I Science Olympiad at Nicholls State University on March 23. In Division B, consisting of nine teams throughout Louisiana with students in 6th-9th grade, Academy of Our Lady’s team placed second overall and qualified for the state competition. Ten Academy of Our Lady students on the Division C team placed in their competing categories. Division C consisted of 14 teams from 11 schools with students in grades 9-12. Academy of Our Lady students in Environmental Science recently visited Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve to conduct lab testing on water quality of the swamp. Students then took their findings back to the classroom to complete activities tied to points of pollution in urban and suburban areas. It was determined that the local swamp water is in good shape.
