A number of incoming pre-freshmen and freshmen have been on campus the month of June for Academy of Our Lady’s Summer Enrichment Program.Students also had the opportunity to get ahead by taking the required Computer Technology course over the summer. On the second to last day of the program, the new Penguins were able to have a little fun on the Summer Camp waterslide followed by pizza for lunch. Prior to the end of the year, underclassman awards were distributed to students during homeroom. This school year was a year of new experiences from safety guidelines to online class days due to Covid-19. Students were required and asked to make new adjustments like never before. Each student was a true example of resilience and poise as patience was exhibited daily. Coursework and academics were a priority evening during such trying times. Though a proper awards ceremony could not be held, students were honored for their achievement by receiving certificates of recognition. Members of Key Club visited the new Berean House Community Center for the homeless and city community. While there sophomore Elaine Lesnak, pre-freshman Allie Marcel, freshman Kaylin Marbry, sophomore Victoria Oswald, freshman Giselle Ramos, sophomore Kidron Romoser, pre-freshman Abigail Thiaville and sophomore Angelina Verberne assisted with painting of the interior of the building. Health Science Faculty Member Mrs. Melinda Harlow was honored as Teacher of the Year for her work as moderator of the Stars and Stripes Club. In addition, Dr. Vanessa Blanchard was named Counselor of the Year for her work with the youth. Both honors were given by the Air National Guard. For more click on the title of this post.
Junior Olivia St. Germain is the recipient of the Jaqueline Cambre Scholarship given by the St. Joseph Women’s Club in Gretna. Recipients of this award have exemplary grades, project good character and are active in the school and community activities. The monetary value of the award is a $1,000 scholarship. The award was presented to Olivia by Father Gary Copping. According to NOLA.com, Jackie Cambre founded two ongoing traditions at St. Joseph’s, the annual living rosary in the garden held each October and Group #135 of the Schoenstatt Rosary Family of Louisiana which is continued by members of the women’s club. Both of Jacqueline Cambre’s daughters, Gretna Mayor Belinda C. Constant and Wendy C. Bush, are Archbishop Blenk High Schools Alumnae.
Academy of Our Lady's Thalian Society is hosting another Bits of Broadway fundraiser benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. The junior class received their senior rings with a special Ring and May Crowning Ceremony held May 15. A prayer service was held with class officers crowning Mary, our mother and helper. Following the crowning each student was bestowed with her senior ring marking the first major event as a high school senior for the class of 2022. For photos click on the title of this post.
Academy of Our Lady Robotics Team member sophomore Kyra Poree’ has been named a Dean’s List Finalist by the FIRST Tech Challenge. Kyra is just one of four students in the four-state region of Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi to be selected. As a finalist, Kyra will participate in the championship round of interviews for the Dean’s List Award. For more click on the title of this post.
The class of 2021 was celebrated May 11 with Baccalaureate Mass. Valedictorian Olivia Marque and Salutatorian Farrah Labadie addressed their classmates. A ceremony was held following Mass announcing the honor graduates as well as the recipients of the Golden Scepter Award and Fiat Voluntas Tua Principal’s Award. Alumnae of Archbishop Blenk High School and Immaculata High School with daughters graduating were also honored. Congratulations to all the graduates! Field Day COVID Style took place Friday, April 23. Though a little different than in years past, Field Day was still a big success. Students arrived to school dressed in their class colors ready for competition. Conducted through the Mass Media studio by Student Council, the day was filled with games where each grade level competed against one another, safely from a classroom, vying for the coveted megaphone. Senior members of the Ambassadors were surprised with a gift for their dedication and exemplary service of representing Academy of Our Lady throughout their years of high school. In lieu of an end of the year party, each senior was given a customized gift with a heartfelt sentiment. It’s safe to say the girls were surprised and thrilled! Academy of Our Lady’s Health Care Club hosted the annual Blood Drive on Thursday, April 15. Members of the Academy of Our Lady community were invited to give blood with all donations given in the name of Jake Meerman. Jake is the two-year-old son of Alumna Michelle Labruzza Meerman ’08 who has been diagnosed with B Lymphoblasic Leukemia. Let us continue to keep Jake in our daily prayers. The Louisiana sector of Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society hosted its annual State Convention on March 27. This year’s convention was held virtually due to Covid-19. The evening of Friday, April 9 Academy of Our Lady was filled with joy, laughter and fun during Penguin Palooza! Girls in grades 4th-7th took part in activities led by ambassadors and student council representatives. Students put their creativity to the test by decorating their own sunglasses and competing in a Tik Tok dance competition where each group was responsible for choregraphing their own unique dance. The night ended with trivia testing everyone’s knowledge. The Salesian Family Spirit was evident throughout campus. We hope to see everyone again soon! For photos click on the title of this post.
Before venturing to Dallas, Texas to compete in the NCA High School National Competition, Academy of Our Lady Cheer held a performance showcase for family and friends on Wednesday, March 3.
