Field Day COVID Style took place Friday, April 23. Though a little different than in years past, Field Day was still a big success. Students arrived to school dressed in their class colors ready for competition. Conducted through the Mass Media studio by Student Council, the day was filled with games where each grade level competed against one another, safely from a classroom, vying for the coveted megaphone. Academy of Our Lady senior Sanaa Washington placed second and received a $500 scholarship by participating in the annual Amitie’ Scholarship Essay Contest. For more click on the title of this post.
Senior Chloe Armentor has accepted 4-year scholarship to Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport where she will be a member of the gymnastics team. Chloe has been a competing gymnast for 16 years. She is a state and regional qualifier for level 7, 8, 9 and 10. At Centenary, Chloe plans to major in elementary education with a concentration in community and social justice. Congratulations Chloe! We are proud you! Senior members of the Ambassadors were surprised with a gift for their dedication and exemplary service of representing Academy of Our Lady throughout their years of high school. In lieu of an end of the year party, each senior was given a customized gift with a heartfelt sentiment. It’s safe to say the girls were surprised and thrilled! Good luck to the Softball Team as they play St. Thomas More High School tomorrow (April 23) at 4:30 pm in the State Quarterfinal matchup! Academy of Our Lady’s Health Care Club hosted the annual Blood Drive on Thursday, April 15. Members of the Academy of Our Lady community were invited to give blood with all donations given in the name of Jake Meerman. Jake is the two-year-old son of Alumna Michelle Labruzza Meerman ’08 who has been diagnosed with B Lymphoblasic Leukemia. Let us continue to keep Jake in our daily prayers. Archbishop Shaw’s Cheerleading Team is off to Orlando to compete in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Competition April 23-25. The team hosted a showcase for family and friend on April 19 where they practiced and performed their competition routines. Senior Megan O’Brien recently signed to accept an athletic scholarship from Loyola University New Orleans where she will be a member of the dance team. Megan is currently the captain of the Archbishop Shaw Eaglettes. She has been a member of the team for the last five years. Students currently enrolled in physics ventured to Archbishop Shaw’s pool on Monday, April 19 to test their cardboard boats as part of the annual physics boat project. Putting their understanding of buoyancy, fluid dynamics and engineering practices to the test, students constructed boats out of cardboard to race against their classmates with the challenge of making sure the boat can sustain weight without sinking. The Louisiana sector of Mu Alpha Theta National Honor Society hosted its annual State Convention on March 27. This year’s convention was held virtually due to Covid-19. Academy of Our Lady senior Lacey Johnson has been named a distinguished finalist in The Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards. As a distinguished finalist, Lacey was chosen by state-level judges as one of the top Louisiana runners-up in this year’s program. To read more click on the title of this post.
The evening of Friday, April 9 Academy of Our Lady was filled with joy, laughter and fun during Penguin Palooza! Girls in grades 4th-7th took part in activities led by ambassadors and student council representatives. Students put their creativity to the test by decorating their own sunglasses and competing in a Tik Tok dance competition where each group was responsible for choregraphing their own unique dance. The night ended with trivia testing everyone’s knowledge. The Salesian Family Spirit was evident throughout campus. We hope to see everyone again soon! For photos click on the title of this post.
Senior Softball Team members were honored for their time and dedication to the Academy of Our Lady Athletic Program on Tuesday, April 6. Each senior was presented with a gift and flowers on the mound of the softball field for a pregame celebration prior to taking on De La Salle. We are thrilled to see what these young ladies accomplish in the future. Join us Thursday, April 15 as we honor the 2020 seniors from last year during the pregame ceremony at 4:30 pm.
