Members of the Speech and Debate Club senior Jenna Hymel and freshman Ashlyn Gisclair competed in the virtual Springboard Series sponsored by the Julia Burke Foundation hosted by the National Speech and Debate Association. Academy of Our Lady students debated against other students throughout the United States in the Lincoln Douglas category on December 5.
The National Art Honor Society carried out the annual Christmas tradition of creating ornaments and decorating bags to give to the staff of Academy of Our Lady. The penguin ornaments were decorated COVID style wearing a mask, carrying roll toilet paper and a bottle of hand sanitizer. Club members also hosted a virtual Christmas meeting. Academy of Our Lady’s chapter of the National Honor Society held the annual Academic Fair for students in grades 2-7 during the week of November 30. Due to the times, the event was held distantly with students taking the tests on their own campus. Tests were picked up from each school, by an Academy of Our Lady representative, to be scored on December 7. The Academy of Our Lady community celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 with two social distanced Alumni Memorial Masses in an effort to accommodate everyone safely. Alumnae from Archbishop Blenk High, Immaculata High School and Academy of Our Lady were invited back to campus to remember and honor those members of the Academy of Our Lady family who have gone before us. On November 20 the entire Academy of Our Lady family took time off from the classroom to celebrate St. Mary Mazzarello Day. A new Academy of Our Lady tradition created this year to honor the co-founder of the Institution of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. Events included Salesian learning sessions, Powderpuff at Archbishop Shaw’s Stadium and the presentation of the 2020 Homecoming Court. Academy of Our Lady welcomed more than 100 future penguins to campus on December 3 for Open House. Guests met with Principal Sr. Michelle Geiger, toured campus with a faculty and student guide, viewed academic offerings and ended the evening in the gym with club and athletic displays. Students of the year selection is based on academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.
