Engineering I & III classes were treated to a special presentation from guest speaker Laura Smith, PE. Smith is currently a structural engineer associate at Silman located in New York, Washington DC and Boston. Smith’s portfolio includes various types of projects such as multi-story residential buildings, healthcare facilities and institutional buildings. A few of her notable projects include Paul Milstein Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, the National Museum of African American History of Culture in Washington DC and the New York Botanical Garden in Bronx, New York. Seniors in Art 4 attended a field trip on March 14 to learn the history of the Ninth Ward and desegregation. Students toured the Lower Ninth Ward Living Museum, visited the site of McDonogh #19 school, and spoke with Mrs. Leona Tate, who helped to desegregate schools in the south. A group of Academy of Our Lady students traveled to Ireland on a school trip March 2-10. Their tour of Ireland included Dublin, Belfast, Sligo, Knock, Limerick, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Blarney and Shannon. Faculty, family, friends and alumni also went along for the adventure. Twenty-two Academy of Our Lady students traveled to Thibodaux, Louisiana to compete in the Louisiana Region I Science Olympiad at Nicholls State University on March 23. In Division B, consisting of nine teams throughout Louisiana with students in 6th-9th grade, Academy of Our Lady’s team placed second overall and qualified for the state competition. Ten Academy of Our Lady students on the Division C team placed in their competing categories. Division C consisted of 14 teams from 11 schools with students in grades 9-12. Students in 4th-7th grade gathered on campus Friday, March 15 for the final Fantastic Friday Night of the year hosted by the Fine Arts and Religion departments. Activities included making dirt cake in the culinary lab, creating flower pots, crafting St. Therese sacrifice beads, singing and viewing a preview of Academy of Our Lady’s spring musical production Little Shop of Horrors. The annual Basket & BBQ Bash was held Saturday, March 23. Attendees enjoyed delicious food, an Easter egg hunt, pictures with the Easter bunny, great music played by a DJ and fantastic prizes. Eight Academy of Our Lady bowlers were honored for their dedication to the team throughout their high school career on March 11. The Academy of Our Lady bowlers successful won their match against Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy with a score of 24.5-2.5.
Grow in faith and creativity! Girls in 4th-7th grade are invited to an evening filled with the arts and faith based activities hosted by Academy of Our Lady's Fine Arts and Religion departments on March 15. Activities include viewing a performance of Academy of Our Lady's production of Little Shop of Horrors, making dirt cake in the culinary lab, creating St. Therese sacrifice beads and so much more! Academy of Our Lady students competed in the New Orleans division of the annual Southeast Louisiana District Rally on February 23. Six students qualified to compete in the State Rally on April 6 at Louisiana State University. Three students received honorable mention in the art division. Sophomore Megan O'Brien and junior Ellie Green spent the day at the Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, on February 16, attending a teen workshop directed by Dr. Lenny DeLorenzo, a professor at the University of Notre Dame. He shared skills from his book Witness: Learning to Tell the Stories of Grace that Illumine Our Lives. He also encouraged students to formulate and tell their own faith stories.
