Academy of Our Lady athletes were honored by the Westbank Quarterback Club on May 23. The 2018 Bowling Team was honored for their achievement of winning the LHSAA State Championship. Senior Erin Burkart received recognition as the LHSAA Individual State Bowling Champion. Senior Hailee Richard was selected as Academy of Our Lady’s 2017-18 Westbank High School Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year. Richard was also the recipient of the Ennis H. An Underclassmen Awards Ceremony was held May 21 to honor students at Academy of Our Lady who have accomplished notable academic achievements by earning the highest average in a course, receiving a community award, participating in an honor society, earning college credit hours by successfully completing a dual enrollment course and achieving exemplary conduct for the year. Academy of Our Lady celebrated its eleventh baccalaureate mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Marrero and commencement exercise at the Alario Center in Westwego on May 15. Diplomas were awarded to 118 graduates by Principal Sister Michelle Geiger. Dr. RaeNell Houston, Superintendent of Catholic Schools of Archdiocese of New Orleans, addressed the graduates during the commencement exercise. The valedictorian was Caroline Lassere, of Marrero. Lassere plans to attend University of Louisiana Lafayette on scholarship. The salutatorian was Sandy Vo, of Harvey. Vo plans to attend Xavier University of Louisiana on scholarship. Seniors study different religions observed throughout the world and in different cultures for a semester. They ended the year visiting a local Buddhist Temple, Muslim Mosque, Jewish Synagogue and Hindu Temple. A world of peace and respect begins with mutual understanding and dialogue. Academy of Our Lady’s Thalian Society presented a Broadway benefit on April 25, entitled Bits of Broadway, in honor of fallen Westwego police officer Michael Louviere’s family. The benefit performance included 10 different numbers from a variety of Broadway shows and raised $2,000 for the family.
Welcome Night is the first introduction to Academy of Our Lady for all newly accepted incoming students and their families. Held April 25 attendees had the opportunity to purchase uniforms and received important information pertaining to the 2018-19 school year. Academy of Our Lady’s annual Spirit Week was held April 23-27. Students dressed according to the daily themes which included Meme Monday, Testing Tuesday, USA, Salad Dressing Day and Color Wars. Rounding out the week was Field Day. Each grade level competed against one another to win the coveted spirit megaphone. Senior Farewell festivities began following Field Day. The student body president and senior class president gave departing words, the senior class slideshow followed, seniors pinned their junior sisters, the class of 2018 composite was hung up on the hallway wall in the classroom building and the seniors walked through campus one final time. A reception was held on campus April 25 to honor the student athletes at Academy of Our Lady who have committed to play on the collegiate level. Senior Hailee Richard will play volleyball at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, senior Sofia Lopez will play soccer at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi and senior Erin Burkart will bowl at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsberg, Maryland. The Academy of Our Lady Key Club placed third the Year in Review Contest for their Traditional Scrapbook at the 75th Annual Convention of LAMISSTENN District of Key Club International on April 13-15 in Baton Rouge. LAMISSTENN covers several Key Clubs charters spread over 16 Divisions and three states (Louisiana, Mississippi, and the western part of Tennessee).
