Mr. Joseph Bordlee, who teaches English 8, English IV DE, English V and Yearbook at Academy of Our Lady, is the winner of Barnes & Noble’s My Favorite Teacher Contest. Senior Calli Nguyen nominated Mr. Bordlee by submitting an essay detailing how influential Mr. Bordlee has been throughout her high school education. Calli’s essay was selected as the winner among other entries submitted by students from schools throughout the local area. Faculty and family members of both Mr. Bordlee and Calli gathered for a reception in celebration on April 21 at Barnes & Noble in Harvey. Representatives from the University of New Orleans stopped by campus on Wednesday, April 25 to host a Pizza Party for all Academy of Our Lady seniors accepted to UNO. Academy of Our Lady had a total of 44 students who applied and were accepted to UNO – the largest amount of students out of all the New Orleans Catholic Girls Schools this year and in Academy of Our Lady history.

Senior Erin Burkart signed and committed to attending Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Mount St. Mary’s University awarded Burkart an Athletic Scholarship for Bowling and a Leadership Grant. Burkart led the bowling team in winning the first State Championship in Academy of Our Lady’s short history. She is also the LHSAA State Singles Bowling Champion. Physics students demonstrated their understanding of buoyancy, fluid dynamics and engineering practices by constructing boats out of cardboard and putting them to test in a race against their classmates. The challenge was to make sure the boat could actually sustain weight without sinking. To view photos click on the title of this post.
Girls in grades 4-7 had a blast at Academy of Our Lady’s annual Penguin Palooza on April 13. The girls were split into 4 teams and competed in field day-style games in the Ultimate Spirit Competition. All members of the National English Honor Society worked together to comprise and write a book of poetry. Keeping with the mission of the honor society, students contributed original work to the book in an effort to promote literacy, writing and poetry. Welcome Night for new students will be held on Wednesday, April 25. The purpose of the evening is to share valuable information about the 2018-2019 school year, explain placement test results and announce scholarship recipients. Students who have registered will also receive verification of course selection for the 2018-2019 school year. Beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the gym, uniform items will be available for purchase from Skobel’s School Uniforms and spirit wear from student council. Sales will end at 5:45 p.m. Administration and faculty presentations will then begin at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.
