Students in Mr. Bordlee’s English 102 Dual Enrollment class read the classic Holocaust memoir Night by Elie Wiesel as part of their literature studies. As part of the unit, students examined the background to the German government’s racist policies that led to the execution of millions of Jews by Nazis in prison camps around Europe during World War II. English 102 students were then assigned to create a symbol that captured Night’s theme, and the students then rendered the symbol with a written explanation for display in the classroom.
Two freshmen religion classes visited Wynhoven Healthcare Center after researching a saint and shared their new knowledge with one or more residents. At the beginning of their visit, the students attended a brief orientation given by Melody Robinson of Wynhoven. The students will visit again throughout the rest of the school year. Academy of Our Lady’s Sparkles of Light club coordinated a donation drive benefitting the Harry Thompson Center in New Orleans, an organization that provides shelter services for the homeless. Academy of Our Lady students in Environmental Science recently visited Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve to conduct lab testing on water quality of the swamp. Students then took their findings back to the classroom to complete activities tied to points of pollution in urban and suburban areas. It was determined that the local swamp water is in good shape. Academy of Our Lady’s Mission Club sponsored the annual Christmas Toy Drive. Academy of Our Lady students and staff provided toys and clothing for 30 students from the Algiers School District who are in a particular need of a little help to have a brighter Christmas this year. Academy of Our Lady senior Madeline Boudreau formally committed to playing golf at the University of Nebraska Omaha on December 14 by signing a letter of intent. Boudreau, an avid golfer and a member of the Academy of Our Lady golf team, also received scholarship offers from Metropolitan State University of Denver and Lewis University in Illinois. Girls in 4th-6th grade tested their knowledge of geography, social studies and showcased their athletic skills by attending Fantastic Friday Night on December 14. Hosted by the social studies and physical education departments, the evening consisted of traveling around the world to different sessions where students participated in various activities including an iPad scavenger hunt, geography based trivia, fun relays and so much more. The annual Alumni Memorial Mass was held December 12. Alumni from Immaculata, Archbishop Blenk and Academy of Our Lady honored, remembered and celebrated the lives of deceased alumni. Academy of Our Lady’s chapter of the National Honor Society sponsored an annual school-wide food drive November 26 – 30. A total of 1,300 items were collected and donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Immaculate Conception parish directly benefiting those in Marrero, Harvey and Westwego. Academy of Our Lady’s National Honor Society hosted Academic Games for students in 5th-7th grade on Saturday, December 1. Students tested their knowledge in various subjects.
