Seniors gathered in the Library during their lunch study hall on October 15 for College Application Day hosted by the Guidance Department. The guidance counselors and representatives from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance, University of New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana University were present to assist seniors with the application process. “College Application Day is important as it provides students a time during their busy schedule to apply to at least one college or university while providing them with the assistance and guidance they need to accurately complete these applications,” College Advisor Ms. Rye explained. Girls and boys in 4th-7th grade attended Fantastic Friday Night on October 12. The theme of the evening was Super Leadership Night. Sessions were planned by Academy of Our Lady’s Student Council and designed to teach students the fundamental characteristics of a leader. Students took part in various activities including planning a fundraising event, creating capes with descriptions of leadership skills, learning about past great leaders and harnessing the keys to good communication and listening. On October 8 Academy of Our Lady students celebrated Mass and new members of the Sparkles of Light Club received their pins as they read an entrustment to our blessed Mother, Mary. Sparkles of Light is a club open to all students at Academy of Our Lady who love Mary. Academy of Our Lady’s annual Pink Game benefiting Ochsner Cancer Research was held October 9. Academy of Our Lady students painted the gym pink while supporting the volleyball team as they played Belle Chasse High School. Pre-game activities included a pink-themed photobooth hosted by the photography club, tailgate games, a bake sale and a special ceremony coordinated by the Academy of Our Lady Cheerleaders to honor those who have been affected by breast cancer. The recent pep rally, hosted by student council and the AOL Cheerleaders, on September 28 honored fall athletic teams including swimming, cross country and volleyball. Members of the 2018 State Championship Bowling Team received their championship rings. Athletes who received district honors last year were presented with their patches for their letterman jackets. A group of Academy of Our Lady Cheerleaders performed during halftime in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge on Saturday, September 22 as the Louisiana State University Fighting Tigers defeated the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs. “To experience performing in front of a sold out crowd is unlike any other and it was both nerve racking and exhilarating,” sophomore Kaitlyn Shipley said.
