Academy of Our Lady senior Sanaa Washington placed second and received a $500 scholarship by participating in the annual Amitie’ Scholarship Essay Contest.
Amitie’ is a memorial foundation for suicide prevention founded by a group of friends who met in high school and found themselves affected by a classmate’s suicide decades later. Amitie’ is the French word for friendship.
The main purpose the essay contest is to promote awareness and prevention of suicide at the high school level. Students in grades 9-12 were invited to enter the contest by addressing three essential components in their in submission which included breaking the stigma around suicide, personal experience and how faith has helped through difficult times.
