Two freshmen religion classes visited Wynhoven Healthcare Center after researching a saint and shared their new knowledge with one or more residents. At the beginning of their visit, the students attended a brief orientation given by Melody Robinson of Wynhoven. The students will visit again throughout the rest of the school year.
By interacting with residents of Wynhoven Health Care Center, freshmen learn that showing compassion for another is a mandate of their faith. Students learn about faith through the stories of the residents and share their faith and knowledge with their new friends. In the classroom they explore the idea of respect for all life, and learn through service how this can be shown in respect for the elderly. Students have written assignments in class such as writing letters to their elder partners, as well as reflection papers that demonstrate learning.
Freshmen Christine Pham and Haley Tran spend time getting to know a resident of Whyhoven Health Care Center.
Ms. Melody Robinson of Whyhoven Health Care Center gave the students a brief overview of the facility before their visit.
