Key Club Visits Ronald McDonald House for Key Club Week by Senior Rachelle Sancho
On Monday, November 4, members of Academy of Our Lady and Archbishop Shaw High School’s Key Club visited the Ronald McDonald House in New Orleans giving their time to help the residents.
Key Club members made sandwiches, a caesar salad, and fruit for lunch. After lunch members broke up into groups of three and cleaned the toy room, the play room, the pantry, the kitchen and outside areas.
“My favorite part about going to the Ronald McDonald House was getting to hang out with one of the children who was currently staying there and getting to bond with other Key Club members,” said Academy of Our Lady senior and Key Club vice president Kaylin Bair.
Kevin Le, a junior at Archbishop Shaw said, “I washed dished and assisted with food preparation for the residents.” Le also cleaned up the kitchen and helped cook a meal for the residents.
The organization was pleased with the students’ enthusiasm and invited them to return during the Christmas season.
After visiting the Ronald McDonald House, Academy of Our Lady’s Key Club held a food drive to help fill the pantry. About 300 items were collected in three days. Students delivered the items on November 19.
Key Club also raised monetary funds for the Ronald McDonald House by hosting a “Tape your Teacher to the Wall” event. Students paid to see their teachers taped to the wall. Teacher with the most donations, Academy of Our Lady Dean of Student Amy Danos and Director of Guidance Dr. Vanessa Blanchard, were taped to a school wall during lunch.
Key Club is an international student-led service program for high school students to promote leadership and service to others.
