The Thalian Society is rehearsing for the spring musical, a show featuring popular contemporary songs, Don’t Stop the Music. This original musical was written by Ms. Kelly Favaloro, drama teacher, and Sarah Guidroz, senior. No in-person audience will be allowed, but the show will be livestreamed for anyone and everyone to watch.
Don’t Stop the Music is a show that follows “Bayside Academy’s” Eileen Stewart as she begins raising money to start a school radio station. With the help of her friends Stephanie, Vanna and new student Casey, they work to stage a benefit featuring of 21st century music. Rivaling them is student Heather with her crew of Regina, Kim, Tiff, and the quiet girl Tina who want to put on a fashion show to raise money for Heather’s school television station.
“I decided to write a musical for two reasons. First, most musicals feature boys’ parts more than girls and I wanted to showcase the talents of my girls,” said Ms. Favaloro. “Second, with writing our own show we would not have to pay royalties and that would save money. That way we could stream the show to everyone who wanted to watch whether they could donate money or not.”
The show was inspired by modern music and our very own Academy of Our Lady students. “I wanted to use popular music for our student body and express the love of music and friendship in the story. I was inspired by watching my drama girls and their wonderful support for each other,” said Ms. Favaloro.
“It’s new for me as a student, but we wanted a unique show that was different than any other, and if you can’t find the perfect play for you then you write it yourself!” Sarah Guidroz said.
“Writing the musical was very fun,” Sarah added. “I am a creative person, so I really enjoyed bouncing ideas off of Ms. Fav and writing a huge show like this. It pays off more when I see all my writing physically on stage.”
Like many other things, the presence of COVID-19 has changed how the theater department puts on its shows. “We have made many adjustments due to Covid such as distancing our characters, wearing masks, prop handling and costume changes to adapt to Covid restrictions,” Ms. Favaloro said.
