The AOL softball team achieved what few thought they could. The Penguins' goal at the beginning of the 2012 season was to win a distrcit title and make it to the state softball tournament. They achieved both goals. The Penguins split distrcit games with Belle Chasse to share the distrcit title. With the share of the district title the team entered the state playoffs ranked number 18.
The Penguins traveled to Lake Charles to play St. Louis. The team started out hot taking a 7 - 2 lead. The Saints fought back to tie the game in the bottom of the 7th inning Jenna Parker lead off the top of the 8th with a walk and then stole 2nd. Alexis Cressonie hit a double over the left fielders head to score the winning run. The game ended dramatically with a diving catch by 2nd baseman Raquel Munoz.
Alexandria ranked #2 in the state came to play the Penguins at Harvey Playground. Alexis Cressonie hit a homerun in the bottom of the first over the left field fence. The Penguins continued to hit the ball well to take a 4 - 0 lead. Alexandria came back in the top of the 5th playing small ball to cut the lead to 4 - 3. The Penguins added a run in the bottom of the 6th and held on to win 5 - 3. This was Alexandria's first lost in over 20 games. Sarah Bolotte pitched a strong game. This win sent AOL to the State Tournament for the first time.
In first game in Sulphur the Penguins took on Northwood-Shreveport. Jenna Parker had a single in the first and scored on Alyssa Cressonie's base hit. Parker then hit an in the park homerun in the bottom of the third inning. Parker also played solid defense in the field. The Penguins won 4 - 0 behind the pitching of Sarah Bolotte and solid defense by the entire team.
In the semi-final game the Peguins started off strong scoring runs in the first two innings. Leesville continued to battle and scored to runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to tie the game. Both teams continued to battle until the bottom of the 8th inning when Leesville hit a base hit to right field that scored the winning run from 2nd.
The team truly lived up to its motto for the year, "It does not take time to build a team, it takes hardwork and dedication."
Sarsh Bolotte, Halie Wattigney, Marissa Daniel, and Jenna Parker were all honored by the Westbank Quarterback Club during the season.
