Athlete Signs with Local University
Academy of Our Lady Track and Field athlete Kaitlyn Fortuna, New Orleans, signed her letter of intent to run Track for Dillard University.
Those present for the signing include Bobbie Williams, Head Coach of Track and Field at Dillard University; Jonquil Griffin, Women’s Track Team Captain, and Kaitlyn’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Fortuna.
“I am amazed,” said Kaitlyn’s dad, Lonnie. “Her mother and I share going to practices. I ran track at St. Augustine, so I gave her some pointers.”
And the pointers paid off. After struggling to make the Volleyball team, Kaitlyn decided to try out for Track as a sophomore. And there was no stopping her. She came in 2nd in District in the 200 meter dash in her first year and 3rd in district in her second year. Academy of Our Lady is a member of the very competitive district 9-AAAA. This year, she came in 2nd in the triple jump in the Sugar Bowl Track Meet.
“I watched her run track, and I liked what I saw,” said Coach Williams. “She has a tremendous ‘upside’ and a potential to be great. For someone who has not been competing long, she is doing very well,” he concluded.
The signing ceremony took place at the beginning of the Spring Sports pep rally at the Academy with the entire student body, faculty and staff present.
“Sports are a very important component of a Salesian school,” said Principal Sr. Michelle Geiger. “We are proud of Kaitlyn for all of her accomplishments.”
