SADD Assembly Depicts Dangers of Drinking and Driving

A real-life simulation of an auto accident brought home the potentially devastating effects of drunk driving to Academy students. The simulation, which took place in the school parking lot at Avenue D and Fifth Street, utilized an actual wrecked car and some on-site visits from local first responders. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) sponsored the simulation, and it featured four students who acted out the roles of accident victims while seated in the wrecked vehicle. Members of the Marrero-Harvey Volunteer Fire Company pulled up to campus in their truck, equipped themselves in full response gear, and used mechanical extrication tools to remove the car’s roof during the simulated rescue. Thanks to some artfully applied make up, the victims appeared to have suffered serious and bloody injuries. Some victims were taken away by a West Jefferson Medical Center Ambulance, while another was pronounced dead at the scene and had her body draped in a white sheet. State Police Officer Shawn Boyd of Troop B arrested the car’s driver and took her away to jail after she failed a sobriety test. After the simulation’s conclusion, Trooper Boyd and Don Robertson, fire chief with the Marrero-Harvey company, both lectured the student body on the harsh realities of what can happen when motorists drive while under the influence of alcohol.
