National English Honor Society

Academy of Our Lady is proud to be the first and only Catholic girls’ high school in the New Orleans area to have a chapter of the National English Honor Society.

The mission and purposes of the National English Honor Society shall be literary and educational. NEHS shall strive to confer distinction upon Academy of Our Lady students for high achievement in English language and literature, provide cultural stimulation, encourage interest in the English language arts, promote exemplary character and good fellowship among its members, and serve society by fostering literacy.

In order to qualify as members of the National English Honor Society at Academy of Our Lady, students must maintain a 4.00 GPA in English Honors courses.  Students must have completed two years of English honors courses at Academy of Our Lady and must continue to take English honors or AP courses.  Also, students must not have a report card grade of D or F in any subject. Students must also actively participate in at least two English related classes, clubs or school activities.  English related classes include mass media, newspaper, yearbook, film studies, and theater classes.  English related clubs or activities include Thalian Society, Academy of Our Lady literary magazine The Tip of the Iceberg, or Academy of Our Lady play auditions.

The Academy of Our Lady National English Honor Society celebrates the birthdays of famous authors throughout the school year, holds the Elementary School Writing Contest for girls enrolled in local elementary schools, participates in the Mission Club Food Auction, and holds an annual Book Drive.
