Health and Physical Education Department
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 8 is a semester course for 8th graders. This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of physical activities. The curriculum for this course includes aerobics, individual and teams sports, recreational games, and the Presidential Physical Fitness program. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: None
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION I –YEAR is a course which focuses on the team sports of beginning volleyball, basketball, soccer, and wiffle ball. This course also includes a 30 hour health component which consists of knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle while emphasizing weight management, physical fitness for life, nutrition, self esteem, understanding mental health and managing stress, drugs and medication, alcohol use and abuse, and tobacco and its impact on health. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: None
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION I-B is a required semester course that is designed to follow PE I-A. This class continues to build on the team sports previously learned and also includes an individual sports and cardiovascular fitness training. Also included in the curriculum is a 15 hour Health Education unit that deals with understanding drugs and medication, alcohol use and abuse, and tobacco and its impact on health. Emphasis is placed on the Presidential Physical Fitness Program. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: H & PE I-A
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION II-YEAR is a required course that is designed to follow Health & PE I. This class continues to build on the team sports previously learned and includes a cardiovascular fitness training unit, as well as CPR training. Also included is a 30 hour health component that deals with understanding basic first-aid, nutrition information on carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water and food and how they affect body weight. A section on eating disorders and how to maintain healthy body weight is also covered. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: H & PE I
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION II-A is designed to follow PE I-A and I-B. This class continues to build on the team sports previously learned and also includes recreational games, yoga, aerobics, fitness walking, ultimate Frisbee, and cardiovascular fitness training as well as CPR training. Included in the curriculum is a 15 hour Health Education unit on basic first aid. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: H & PE I-A and I-B
HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION II-B is the final semester of the required Physical Education program. This class continues to build on the team sports previously learned and also includes recreational games, yoga, aerobics, fitness walking, ultimate Frisbee, and cardiovascular fitness training. Also included in the curriculum is a 15 hour Health Education component which focuses on nutrition for life and includes carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water and food and how they affect body weight. HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION III is an elective semester course in which emphasis is placed on cardiovascular and strength improvement. Topics offered for selection include team sports, strength training, fitness walking, jogging, self defense, rope fitness walking, stability balls, power bands, and the Presidential Physical Fitness program. A PE uniform is required. Prerequisite: H & PE I-A, I-B, II-A, and II-B or concurrent enrollment in II-B
