FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE I is a comprehensive, foundation course designed to assist students in developing the core knowledge and skills needed to manage their lives. Emphasis is on nutrition and foods and textiles and apparel. Critical skills in decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, technology, work and family management, and workplace readiness are reinforced through authentic experiences such as menu planning, recipe development, food/supply purchasing, food preparation and clothing repair techniques. Included in the course will be the study of fashion and design, where students will learn how social, religious, economic, and technology influence clothing design. This course will be taught through lecture, discussions, demonstrations, videos, and readings.
A lab fee of approximately $55 will be charged to cover food and clothing labs. Prerequisite: None (Students with previous credit in Food and Nutrition and Clothing & Textiles cannot schedule this course.)
NUTRITION AND FOOD is a semester course designed to focus on advanced food preparation techniques while applying nutrition, food science, and test kitchen concepts using new technology. Students develop skills in preparing foods such as breads, cakes, pastries, and desserts. The students will also explore careers related to the food industry. The kitchen labs will be used to provide hands-
on experience. A lab fee of approximately $40 will be charged to cover costs. Prerequisite: Family and Consumer Science I; None for Juniors and Seniors
ADVANCED NUTRITION AND FOOD is a semester course designed for students who wish to pursue a career in the field of Culinary Arts and provides advanced experiences in food production, management, and service. Topics include menu planning, business management, and guest relations. Students develop skills in preparing entrees, vegetables, appetizers, and hors d’oeuvres. The kitchen labs will be used to provide hand-on experience. A lab fee of approximately $65 will be charged to cover costs. Prerequisite: Nutrition and Food
CLOTHING AND TEXTILES is a semester course designed to examine clothing production in the areas of preparation for clothing construction, basic clothing construction techniques, consumer decision, textiles, historical perspectives and design, and career opportunities. Emphasis is placed on students applying these construction and design skills to apparel and home fashion including one garment and two alternate sewing projects. Students will be responsible for purchasing required supplies. A lab fee of approximately $15 will be collected to cover sewing costs. Prerequisite: Family and Consumer Science I; No prerequisites for Juniors and Seniors
CHILD DEVELOPMENT is a semester course designed to study human growth and development from conception through age 12. Students will study physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development. Instruction includes prenatal development, inherited characteristics, health and safety, guidance and discipline, cultural diversity, and child abuse and neglect. Students are expected to participate in class discussions, projects, and outside readings. Some of the key assignments include analyzing case study scenarios, evaluating children’s literature, as well as reflective writing. This course provides a solid foundation for any career that involves working with children, including childcare and education. A fee of approximately $15 will be charged to purchase the student activity manual. Prerequisite: None
